Best of '04

I always thought I consumed a lot of music, but this was the year I started writing for Pitchfork and having access to promos. It was a good year for music in a lot of ways – the last Karate record, the first really good of Montreal record, the last really good Ted Leo record, and the crowning glory of the Arcade Fire’s Funeral.

  1. The Arcade Fire – Funeral
    • Still the undisputed #1 for this year and several surrounding it.
  2. The Secret Machines – Now Here is Nowhere
  3. Franz Ferdinand – s/t
  4. Karate – Pockets
    • This was probably even stupid at the time – this record is much better than the two above it.
  5. of Montreal – Satanic Panic in the Attic
    • Same thing – should probably be #3. I still love and listen to this album all the time.
  6. Ted Leo – Shake the Sheets
  7. The Mountain Goats – We Shall All Be Healed
    • Should be #4.
  8. Now It’s Overhead – Fall Back Open
  9. Wilco – A Ghost is Born
  10. Sufjan Stevens – Seven Swans

Honorable mentions (from lower in my rankings that belonged much higher:

Luna – Rendezvous (at #12 – but better than Now It’s Overhead at least)

French Kicks – Trial of the Century (at #16 – now would be my #5)
