Davey Von Bohlen

Davey Von Bohlen

my son, isaac, turns 6 next month, and recently inherited a hand-me-down ipod from his favorite aunt. even though he already had a short list of requests for us to load onto it (japandroids, kil kare, the aquarium) he left us plenty of open space to include “new” songs for his future discovery. without influence from us, we’ve noticed him spending an awful lot of free time with ear buds glued to his head. turns out, he’s developed a strong preference for martime, the latest project from promise ring frontman davey von bohlen.

i’m pretty pleased with this. other than maybe pedro the lion and pinback, the promise ring rank highest for bands i’ve seen live more than any others. the horse latitudes, nothing feels good, very emergency; but especially wood/water and boys + girls . . . these albums represent a coming-of-age for me in my 20s. from a last-minute, thrown together house party in salt lake (where my husband’s band, maya shore, opened for the promise ring) to a hyper fun post-surgery dv8 (or whatever it was called at the time) show in the early 2000s, davey never disappoints.

and today maritime is no exception. even ask my awesome kindergartener son. he is, after all, part of the generation that is going to make millennials irrelevant.
