Wow! .. Not sure how i ended up here… BUt i can only say congrats for writing such concise thread, not only celebratory of an artiste but also one that conveys a strong sense of the mysticism inherent in discovering music, pre-internet days…
Now, any tom dick and harry can just place his silly mobile phone next to a speaker and find out the lot… , then upload it to his silly i-pod, along will young, u2, dido, and godknows what else….
hey, i am young-ish, …. but i still keep lists and chase records…
But back to the Starlings.
‘Valid’, ‘Too many dogs’…. very good stuff… Some of the tunes on the ep’s too….
Didn’t know there was a third LP…
The solo record, … frankly , i listen to one song and skip the rest. But that song goes on my compilations of mine… Can’t remember the title but it has a chorus that goes on about ‘ passport photographs, cheque stubs , baggage tags… ‘ Great tune…
And if anyone knows if that is available on vinyl, or too many dogs, on vinyl too, please let me know….
Finally, found another stoopid band of the same name on the net, whilst looking for vids of Chris Sheehan… SOMEONE DEAL WITH THAT, PLEASE?

Awesome to find this post. I interviewed chris when I was a music director at my college radio station in Wisconsin, and loved valid, and have a copy on vinyl in storage in the use, haven’t heard it in years since I am overseas. I once sent him an email at his chrisstarlings website and received a cryptic response, and now though it says he’s gone…..any idea where in the world he is? Is he still making music. I like all of you think that his music is amazing and very dark and brooding. Anyway any updates on his whereabouts….I guess what fans he has should stick together! Thanks.

Well, it was more meant to be comical than paranoid. But I would say that although new wave, britpop, and postpunk are well-respected genres, I don’t think Jesus Jones historically gets a pass due to being associated with any of them in particular. They’re more of a 90s anomaly – a crossover band that managed to score a hit or two during the heady alt rock explosion.

Your approach in writing the article is paranoid. You assume that all the readers of your article will make fun of Jesus Jones and the fact that you love the band.

You fail to recognize the obvious reality that you’re not the only one who loves Jesus Jones and the band’s music.

I am one of those, and I have so many fellow music enthusiasts who love not only Jesus Jones but the entire BritPop genre, as well as New Wave and Postpunk.

I’ve been looking for this album for ages, too – had a copy on CD, but it was stolen in a burglary in 2000… bought it in Seattle in the mid 1990s before moving to NZ (heard “That’s it, you’re in trouble” on the University of Washing radio station, and even rang in to request it so I could tape it (before finding Valid in local CD shop). I was amazed to find out that Chris is a kiwi, and played with one of my top kiwi bands, the Mutton Birds.

Perhaps Janine can correct me on this, but I remember reading somewhere about Chris that he wrote and recorded all of the parts of Valid himself – I think he might’ve had someone else play the drums for the loops he used…
